The Knights of Columbus is the world's largest Catholic fraternal service organization. Founded in the United States in 1882, it is named in honor of Christopher Columbus. There are more than 1.7 million members in 14,000 councils, with nearly 200 councils on college campuses. Membership is limited to "practicing Catholic" men aged 18 or older.
The primary motivation for the Order was to be a mutual benefit society. In the late 19th century, Catholics were regularly excluded from labor unions and other organizations that provided social services. In addition, Catholics were either barred from many of the popular fraternal organizations, or, as in the case of Freemasonry, forbidden from joining by the Catholic Church itself.
The Westside Council, Matthew Barrett Council, is anchored at St. Joseph Parish. Meetings are held monthly on Tuesdays. The current Grand Knight is Juan Espinosa. You may reach him at 505.898.7399. |
